This month in our Open Mind series, pro­ducer Peter Aronson talks with Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, a Buddhist nun from England who spent 12 years med­i­tat­ing alone in a cave high in the Himalayas. She says our human poten­tial is to become per­fect embod­i­ments of com­pas­sion and wis­dom. And “it’s our mind that deceives us, but it’s also our mind that can lib­er­ate us.”

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo’s life story is recounted in the biog­ra­phy, Cave in the Snow, by Australian jour­nal­ist Vicki Mackenzie. She is renowned for her warmth and also for her clar­ity on the topic of meditation.
