Excerpt from the doc­u­men­tary about Tibet

China for­mally with­drew two Chinese films from the Palm Springs film fes­ti­val in protest of the sched­uled screen­ing of a doc­u­men­tary about Tibet and the Dalai Lama. While Chinese offi­cials told the festival’s direc­tor that the film­mak­ers them­selves had decided to with­draw their state-​​financed works, it is widely believed that it is the state send­ing a mes­sage, rather than the indi­vid­u­als. That doc­u­men­tary about Tibet, “The Sun Behind the Clouds: Tibet’s Struggle for Freedom,” fol­lows the Dalai Lama over a year through protests over the sta­tus of Tibet that were timed to coin­cide with prepa­ra­tions for the Beijing Olympics.
