Recently, at the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Dalai Lama paid his 4th visit to the campus, his first being in 1984. Since then, the University created the Tibetan Cultural Studies endowment and in 2001, the XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Chair in Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies was established in the Department of Religious Studies. Upon the invitation of the XIV Dalai Lama Chair, Professor Jose Cabezon, His Holiness returned to speak to a crowd of over 3,000 at Thunderdome basketball stadium for the day. In the morning, the Dalai Lama delivered a scholarly lecture on the ‘Nature of Mind’ which covered all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism. In the afternoon, his talk was entitled ‘Ethics for Our Time’ in which the Dalai Lama answered a variety of personal questions in addition to the topical concerns of the moment--addressing how to stop one’s internal struggle, and keep the peace in the face of financial worries, relationship problems, and physical pain.
For our Open Mind segment this month, producer Julie Adler brings you exclusive audio from that afternoon talk.
