From Tibet critic to defender

A Chinese journalist’s Tibetan odyssey

“Whenever I hold a pen, it is all about Tibet.”

Those words come from an unlikely source, a Chinese jour­nal­ist who under­went a per­sonal trans­for­ma­tion from critic of Tibetan soci­ety to one of its most pas­sion­ate defenders.

From her first visit to Tibet in 1997, Zhu Rui fell in love with the scenery, the cul­ture and the peo­ple. “All my under­stand­ing of Tibet came after I saw Tibet myself for the first time,” she says. “I want to tell every one what I saw and what I heard, even if it’s just to a sin­gle Chinese person.”
