Jamyang Norbu: Rangzen revolution

Jamyang Norbu is a Tibetan author and essay­ist who has often expressed open crit­i­cism of the Tibetan gov­ern­ment in exile, which he regards as too con­cil­ia­tory to Beijing. He served for a time in the Tibetan resis­tance in Mustang in the 1970’s and is a strong pro­po­nent of rangzen, or inde­pen­dence, as the main polit­i­cal goal for Tibetans, oppos­ing the Dalai Lama’s Middle Way pro­posal that seeks gen­uine auton­omy for Tibet under China’s rule. A leg­endary intel­lec­tual fig­ure in the exiled Tibetan com­mu­nity, Jamyang Norbu was in Dharmasala, India, this month as a del­e­gate to the Special Meeting called for by the Dalai Lama to brain­storm the future of the Tibetan cause. South Asia Correspondent, Rebecca Novick, caught up with him out­side the meet­ing hall, to find out what this vet­eran critic and so-​​called rad­i­cal thought about the pro­ceed­ings.
