Jamyang Norbu is a Tibetan author and essayist who has often expressed open criticism of the Tibetan government in exile, which he regards as too conciliatory to Beijing. He served for a time in the Tibetan resistance in Mustang in the 1970’s and is a strong proponent of rangzen, or independence, as the main political goal for Tibetans, opposing the Dalai Lama’s Middle Way proposal that seeks genuine autonomy for Tibet under China’s rule. A legendary intellectual figure in the exiled Tibetan community, Jamyang Norbu was in Dharmasala, India, this month as a delegate to the Special Meeting called for by the Dalai Lama to brainstorm the future of the Tibetan cause. South Asia Correspondent, Rebecca Novick, caught up with him outside the meeting hall, to find out what this veteran critic and so-called radical thought about the proceedings.
Popular Tibetan writer and critic Jamyang Norbu speaks out on the special meeting, his hopes for Tibet’s future and his very own Shangri-la syndrome.
